Zimbabwe Cultural Centre in Detroit / Detroit Cultural Centre in Zimbabwe

Two domestic spaces become the porthole to two cities in crisis, Harare, Zimbabwe and Detroit, Michigan. By re-imagining the two spaces as cultural consulates, we as hosts, position us as consular agents, initiating collaborations and interactions between artists in Zimbabwe and Detroit, creating a network of communities.

This is a collaborative project with Nontsikelelo Mutiti (New York), Kumbulani Zamuchiya (Harare) and I in Detroit.

Mutroit, pen and paper, 2012

The drawing is a hybrid of the state or provincial coat of arms for Detroit(USA) and Mutare (Zimbabwe)which would be the coat of arms for Michigan and Manicaland. The drawing is done on original stationary from my high school years in Mutare Mudhara. There is a cartoon on the reverse side of the paper done with the same type of pen dating 1984.
